Rib Lake Summary
Rib Lake is a small town located in Taylor County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wausau, WI Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Rib Lake was first settled in 1875 by a group of lumberjacks from the nearby town of Medford. The town was named after the nearby lake, which was named for the abundance of fish ribs found in the lake. The first post office was established in 1877.
In the late 19th century, the town was a major lumbering center. The lumber industry was the main source of employment for the town's residents. The town was also home to a number of sawmills, a grist mill, a tannery, and a cheese factory.
In the early 20th century, the lumber industry began to decline and the town's economy shifted to agriculture. The town was also home to a number of small businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a hotel.

Rib Lake is located at 45°14'17" North, 90°17'45" West (45.238, -90.296). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

There were 471 housing units at an average density of 391.7 per square mile (151.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
