History
The area that is now Plainfield was first settled in 1848 by a group of German immigrants. The village was officially incorporated in 1876.

The economy of Plainfield is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

The racial makeup of the village was 98.68% White, 0.09% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.56% of the population.
There were 431 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,845.
