Nekoosa Summary

Nekoosa is a city located in Wood County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wisconsin Rapids-Marshfield, WI Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The area that is now Nekoosa was first settled in 1848 by a group of settlers from New York. The town was originally called "Nekoosa", which is an Ojibwe word meaning "swift water". The town was officially incorporated in 1876.
In the late 19th century, Nekoosa was a major lumbering center. The Nekoosa Paper Mill was established in 1883 and was the largest employer in the area for many years. The mill was eventually sold to Georgia-Pacific in the late 1990s.

Geography

Nekoosa is located at 44°20'25"N 89°51'45"W (44.3405, -89.8625). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Nekoosa is home to several businesses, including the Nekoosa Paper Mill, which is now owned by Georgia-Pacific. The mill is the largest employer in the area, with over 500 employees. Other businesses in the area include a variety of retail stores, restaurants, and service providers.

As of the census of 2010, there were 2,521 people, 1,072 households, and 645 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,139.1 people per square mile (440.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 0.6% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.3% of the population.
There were 1,072 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.2% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,938, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,964 versus $22,500 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,845. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
