History

Merrill was founded in 1873 by a group of settlers from Merrill, Michigan. The city was named after the Michigan town, which was named after S.S. Merrill, a prominent lumberman. The city was incorporated in 1874 and was designated as the county seat of Lincoln County in 1875.
