Mercer Summary

Mercer is a small town located in Iron County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,731 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Iron County. Mercer is located in the heart of the Northwoods, and is known for its outdoor recreation opportunities.

Geography

Mercer is located at 46°14'17" North, 90°7'17" West (46.238, -90.121). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), of which, 4.1 square miles (10.6 km2) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) of it (2.44%) is water.

Economy

The economy of Mercer is largely based on tourism and outdoor recreation. The town is home to several resorts, campgrounds, and other tourist attractions. The town is also home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, hardware store, and several restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,731 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the town. The population density was 420.3 people per square mile (162.3/km2). There were 890 housing units at an average density of 215.9 per square mile (83.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 98.45% White, 0.12% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.12% from other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.35% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 25.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.88.
