Iron River Summary

Iron River is a small town located in Bayfield County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Iron River, a tributary of the Bad River.

History

Iron River was first settled in 1883 by a group of Finnish immigrants. The town was named after the Iron River, which was named for the iron ore deposits found in the area. The first post office was established in 1884.
In the early 1900s, Iron River was a major logging center. The town was home to several sawmills, a planing mill, and a shingle mill. The logging industry declined in the 1920s, and the town shifted to a more agricultural economy.

Geography

Iron River is located at 46°25'25" North, 91°17'45" West (46.423750, -91.295833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Iron River's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several dairy farms, as well as a few beef and poultry farms. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 294 families residing in the town. The population density was 890.3 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 382.7 per square mile (147.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 98.90% White, 0.09% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 30.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females.
