History

Exeland was founded in 1883 by a group of settlers from Norway. The settlers named the village after their hometown of Exeland, Norway. The village was originally a logging town, and the settlers built a sawmill and a gristmill. The sawmill was used to cut logs for lumber, and the gristmill was used to grind grain.
The village grew slowly over the years, and by the early 1900s, it had a population of around 200 people. The village was home to a variety of businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, a hotel, and a post office.
In the 1920s, the village began to decline as the logging industry moved away from the area. The sawmill and gristmill closed, and the population of the village began to decline. By the 1950s, the population had dropped to around 100 people.
