Chelsea Summary

Chelsea is a small village located in Rock County, Wisconsin, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Rock River, about 10 miles south of Janesville. The population of Chelsea was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Chelsea was first settled in 1836 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was originally known as “New York Settlement”, but was later renamed “Chelsea” after the town of Chelsea, Massachusetts. The village was officially incorporated in 1856.

Geography

Chelsea is located at 42°41'25" North, 89°2'25" West (42.690278, -89.040278). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.9 square miles, all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Chelsea is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several dairy farms, as well as a number of small businesses. The village also has a small industrial park, which is home to several manufacturing companies.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 431 households, and 298 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,179.3 people per square mile (455.7/km²). There were 454 housing units at an average density of 492.2 per square mile (189.9/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 97.90% White, 0.09% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.73% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.37% of the population.
There were 431 households out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the village, the population was spread out with 27.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $48,750. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $22,500 for females. The per capita income for the village was $18,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.3% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.
