History

Antigo was founded in 1876 by a group of settlers from the town of Antigo, Germany. The settlers named the town after their hometown in Germany. The first settlers were mostly German immigrants who had come to the United States in search of a better life. The first post office was established in 1877 and the first school was built in 1878.
The city was incorporated in 1883 and the first mayor was elected in 1884. The city grew rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with the population reaching 4,000 by 1910. The city was a major lumbering center in the early 20th century, with several sawmills and lumber yards located in the city.

The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.5% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 3,521 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.2% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
