History
The area that is now Amherst Junction was first settled in the early 1800s by a group of German immigrants. The village was originally known as “Amherst”, after the town of Amherst, Massachusetts. The name was changed to Amherst Junction in 1871 when the Wisconsin Central Railroad built a line through the village. The railroad brought increased economic activity to the area, and the village grew rapidly.
In the late 19th century, Amherst Junction was a thriving community with a variety of businesses, including a hotel, a general store, a blacksmith shop, a sawmill, and a cheese factory. The village also had a post office, a school, and several churches.
Geography
Amherst Junction is located at 44°35′N 89°37′W (44.5833, -89.6167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
The village is situated on the Wisconsin River, and is surrounded by rolling hills and farmland. The nearest major city is Stevens Point, which is located approximately 20 miles to the south.

As of the 2010 census, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 145 families residing in the village. The population density was 776.4 people per square mile (300.2/km2). There were 226 housing units at an average density of 321.4 per square mile (123.9/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.5% were non-families. 28.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $19,845.
