Amery Summary

Amery is a city located in Polk County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,719 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Polk County.

History

Amery was founded in 1872 by William and Mary Amery, who had moved to the area from Maine. The city was named after them. The first settlers in the area were mostly of Scandinavian descent, and the city was originally known as "Amery Station". The city was incorporated in 1891.

Geography

Amery is located at 45°14'17" North, 92°25'17" West (45.238, -92.421). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Amery is home to several businesses, including a lumber mill, a cheese factory, and a paper mill. The city also has a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other services.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,719 people, 1,093 households, and 717 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,220.3 people per square mile (470.3/km2). There were 1,164 housing units at an average density of 517.2 per square mile (199.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.90% White, 0.07% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 0.85% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.85% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.02.
