Whitefish Bay Summary

Whitefish Bay is a village located in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. It is a suburb of Milwaukee, located on the western shore of Lake Michigan. The population was 13,926 at the 2010 census.

History

Whitefish Bay was first settled in the late 1840s by a group of French-Canadian immigrants. The village was originally known as "White Fish Bay" and was incorporated in 1892. The name was changed to Whitefish Bay in 1895.
The village was originally a fishing and farming community, but it soon became a popular summer resort destination. The first hotel was built in 1892, and the village was incorporated in 1895.
In the early 20th century, Whitefish Bay became a popular destination for wealthy Milwaukeeans. The village was home to several large estates, including the estate of William F. Vilas, a former U.S. Senator and Secretary of the Interior.

Geography

Whitefish Bay is located at 43°06′N 87°54′W (43.10, -87.90). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.3 square miles (6.0 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Whitefish Bay is a primarily residential community, with a small commercial district along Silver Spring Drive. The village is home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 13,926 people, 5,845 households, and 3,717 families residing in the village. The population density was 6,068.2 people per square mile (2,343.2/km2). There were 6,093 housing units at an average density of 2,637.2 per square mile (1,017.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 92.2% White, 2.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 3.2% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 5,845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $76,945, and the median income for a family was $97,945. Males had a median income of $60,945 versus $41,945 for females. The per capita income for the village was $41,945. About 2.2% of families and 3.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
