Waumandee Summary
Waumandee is a small unincorporated community located in Buffalo County, Wisconsin, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Trempealeau River, approximately 10 miles south of the city of Arcadia. The population of Waumandee was estimated to be around 200 people in 2020.
History
Waumandee was first settled in the late 1840s by a group of German immigrants. The town was originally known as “Waumandee”, which is derived from the Ho-Chunk word “waumandee”, meaning “place of the wild geese”. The town was officially incorporated in 1856.
In the late 19th century, Waumandee was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, a cheese factory, and a sawmill. The town also had a post office, a school, and a church.
In the early 20th century, Waumandee began to decline as the railroad bypassed the town. The population decreased and many of the businesses closed. In the 1950s, the town was revitalized when the Trempealeau River was dammed to create a reservoir. The reservoir provided recreational opportunities and attracted new residents to the area.
