Sister Bay Summary

Sister Bay is a village located in Door County, Wisconsin, United States. It is situated on the western shore of Green Bay, and is part of the Green Bay Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the village had a population of 1,024.

History

Sister Bay was first settled in the late 1840s by Norwegian immigrants. The village was originally known as "Ephraim's Bay," after the nearby town of Ephraim. In 1853, the village was renamed "Sister Bay" after two sisters who had settled in the area.

Geography

Sister Bay is located at 44°55'N 87°20'W (44.914, -87.333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Sister Bay is largely based on tourism. The village is home to a variety of restaurants, shops, and lodging establishments. The village also has a marina, which provides access to the waters of Green Bay.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,024 people, 441 households, and 279 families residing in the village. The population density was 790.2 people per square mile (305.3/km2). There were 517 housing units at an average density of 400.2 per square mile (154.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races.
