Shorewood Hills is a village located in Dane County, Wisconsin, United States. It is a suburb of Madison, the state capital, and is located on the western shore of Lake Mendota. The population was 2,917 at the 2010 census.
History
Shorewood Hills was founded in 1921 by a group of Madison businessmen who wanted to create a residential community on the western shore of Lake Mendota. The village was incorporated in 1923 and was named after the nearby town of Shorewood, Wisconsin. The village was designed to be a residential community with a focus on providing a high quality of life for its residents.
Geography
Shorewood Hills is located at 43°4'25"N 89°24'25"W (43.073611, -89.406944). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Shorewood Hills is a primarily residential community, with most of its residents employed in the nearby city of Madison. The village does have a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a pharmacy, and a few restaurants.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 2,917 people, 1,093 households, and 817 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,431.7 people per square mile (937.2/km2). There were 1,164 housing units at an average density of 968.3 per square mile (373.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 94.2% White, 1.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 2.3% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.2% were married couples living together, 5.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.2% were non-families. 21.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 4.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 33.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $107,917, and the median income for a family was $125,917. Males had a median income of $90,000 versus $50,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $54,917. About 1.7% of families and 2.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.2% of those under age 18 and 2.2% of those age 65 or over.
