Sauk City Summary
Sauk City is a village located in Sauk County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baraboo Micropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Sauk City was founded in 1845 by a group of settlers from Sauk County, New York. The village was named after the Sauk people, a Native American tribe that had lived in the area for centuries. The first settlers were mostly of German and Irish descent. The village was incorporated in 1856.
In the late 19th century, Sauk City was a popular tourist destination, with many visitors coming to take advantage of the area's natural beauty. The village was also home to several resorts, including the Sauk City Hotel, which was built in 1876.
Geography
Sauk City is located at 43°25'17" North, 89°45'17" West (43.4214, -89.7548). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Sauk City's economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The village is home to several farms, as well as a number of small businesses. The village is also home to several wineries, including the Wollersheim Winery, which produces award-winning wines.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,541 people, 1,039 households, and 645 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,945.2 people per square mile (750.2/km2). There were 1,093 housing units at an average density of 830.2 per square mile (320.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.9% of the population.
There were 1,039 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.2% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $20,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
