Salem Lakes Summary

Salem Lakes is a village located in Kenosha County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,967 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Racine–Sturtevant Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The area that is now Salem Lakes was originally inhabited by the Potawatomi Native American tribe. The first white settlers arrived in the area in the early 1800s. The village was originally known as Salem Corners, and was incorporated in 1839. The name was changed to Salem Lakes in 2000.

Geography

Salem Lakes is located at 42°32'25" North, 88°7'25" West (42.540278, -88.123611). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), of which, 8.2 square miles (21.3 km2) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) of it (1.17%) is water.

Economy

The economy of Salem Lakes is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants. The village also has a few industrial parks, which provide employment opportunities for local residents.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 5,967 people, 2,093 households, and 1,541 families residing in the village. The population density was 725.3 people per square mile (280.3/km2). There were 2,209 housing units at an average density of 269.3 per square mile (104.1/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 94.2% White, 1.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 2,093 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.84 and the average family size was 3.35.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 28.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 10.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $50,938, and the median income for a family was $58,958. Males had a median income of $41,964 versus $30,917 for females. The per capita income for the village was $21,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.7% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
