Rome Summary
Rome is a city located in Adams County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 4,945 at the 2010 census. Rome is located on the Wisconsin River, and is part of the Wisconsin Rapids–Marshfield–Wisconsin Dells metropolitan area.
History
Rome was first settled in 1848 by a group of settlers from Rome, New York. The town was originally called Rome Corners, and was later changed to Rome. The first post office was established in 1851. The city was incorporated in 1887.
Geography
Rome is located at 44°25′N 89°50′W (44.4133, -89.8333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.17 square miles (10.77 km2), of which, 4.14 square miles (10.69 km2) is land and 0.03 square miles (0.08 km2) is water.
Economy
Rome's economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The city is home to several large farms, as well as a number of small businesses. The city is also home to a number of tourist attractions, including the Rome Corners Historical Museum, the Rome Corners Logging Museum, and the Rome Corners Logging Camp.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 4,845 people, 1,945 households, and 1,269 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,170.2 people per square mile (452.2/km2). There were 2,068 housing units at an average density of 498.2 per square mile (192.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.90% White, 0.17% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.02% of the population.
There were 1,945 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $31,964 versus $22,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,945. About 5.2% of families and 7.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
