History

Rib Mountain was first settled in the late 1800s by German immigrants. The town was named after the nearby Rib Mountain, which is the highest point in Marathon County. The mountain was named by early settlers for its resemblance to a rib bone.
In the early 1900s, the town was a popular tourist destination due to its proximity to the Wisconsin River. The town was also home to a number of resorts, including the Grand View Hotel, which was built in 1906 and was a popular destination for honeymooners.

Rib Mountain is located at 44°54'N 89°37'W (44.9000, -89.6167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 10.2 square miles (26.4 km2), of which 10.1 square miles (26.2 km2) is land and 0.1 square mile (0.2 km2) (0.78%) is water.
The town is located in the north-central part of the state, about 10 miles (16 km) west of Wausau. The town is bordered by the towns of Weston to the north, Kronenwetter to the east, and Rib Falls to the south.

The racial makeup of the town was 95.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.9% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.3% of the population.
There were 3,717 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 26.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.89.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.3 males.
