Poynette Summary

Poynette is a village located in Columbia County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,817 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Madison Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Poynette was first settled in 1845 by William Poynter, a native of England. He named the village after himself. The village was incorporated in 1891.

Geography

Poynette is located at 43°25'25" North, 89°25'25" West (43.423, -89.423). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Poynette is home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a bank, a gas station, and several restaurants. The village also has a small industrial park.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,817 people, 717 households, and 486 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,400.2 people per square mile (541.2/km2). There were 745 housing units at an average density of 572.2 per square mile (221.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.7% White, 0.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.3% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.
