Pewaukee, Wisconsin is a small city located in Waukesha County, Wisconsin. It is situated on the western shore of Pewaukee Lake, about 25 miles northwest of Milwaukee. The city has a population of 13,195 as of the 2010 census, making it the second largest city in Waukesha County.
History
The area that is now Pewaukee was originally inhabited by the Potawatomi Native American tribe. The first white settlers arrived in the area in the early 1800s, and the city was officially incorporated in 1846. The city was named after the Potawatomi word for “lake of shells”, which was a reference to the abundance of shells found in the lake.

There were 5,541 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $54,945, and the median income for a family was $67,917. Males had a median income of $45,945 versus $32,917 for females.
