History

Onalaska was first settled in 1841 by a group of Norwegian immigrants. The city was named after the Norwegian city of Onalaska, which was named after the Onalaska River. The city was incorporated in 1891.

The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 1.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.3% of the population.
There were 7,541 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.3% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
