Monona Summary

Monona, Wisconsin is a city located in Dane County, Wisconsin, United States. It is a suburb of Madison, the state capital, and is located on the eastern shore of Lake Monona. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 7,533.

History

The area that is now Monona was originally inhabited by the Ho-Chunk Native American tribe. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the early 19th century, and the city was officially incorporated in 1960.
The city was named after Lake Monona, which was named after the Ho-Chunk word for “beautiful lake.” The lake was originally known as Lake Winnebago, but was renamed in 1832.

Geography

Monona is located at 43°3′17″N 89°20′17″W (43.054722, -89.338333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), of which 4.9 square miles (12.7 km2) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.7 km2) is water.
The city is located on the eastern shore of Lake Monona, and is bordered by the city of Madison to the west and the town of Blooming Grove to the east. The Yahara River flows through the city, and the city is located within the Yahara River watershed.

The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 2.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 3,093 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $54,917, and the median income for a family was $67,917. Males had a median income of $45,917 versus $35,917 for females.
