Mequon Summary

Mequon, Wisconsin is a city located in Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. It is located on the western shore of Lake Michigan, about 15 miles north of Milwaukee. The city has a population of 23,132 as of the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Ozaukee County.

History

Mequon was first settled in the early 19th century by German immigrants. The first settlers were mostly farmers, and the area was known as Freistadt, meaning “free city” in German. The city was officially incorporated in 1957, and the name was changed to Mequon, which is derived from the Potawatomi word “Miguan”, meaning “a place of plenty”.

Geography

Mequon is located at 43°14′N 87°59′W (43.23, -87.98). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 22.2 square miles (57.5 km2), of which 21.9 square miles (56.7 km2) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2) is water.

Economy

Mequon is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The city is also home to several corporate headquarters, including Quad/Graphics, S.C. Johnson & Son, and Generac Power Systems.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 23,132 people, 8,845 households, and 6,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,053.3 people per square mile (407.7/km2). There were 9,093 housing units at an average density of 416.3 per square mile (160.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 2.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 3.3% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 8,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.2% were married couples living together, 7.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $76,945, and the median income for a family was $93,945. Males had a median income of $63,945 versus $41,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $37,945. About 2.2% of families and 3.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.7% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
