Luxemburg Summary
Luxemburg is a village located in Kewaunee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,945 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
The area that is now Luxemburg was first settled in 1848 by a group of Belgian immigrants. The village was named after the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, the homeland of many of the settlers. The first post office was established in 1851. The village was incorporated in 1883.
Geography
Luxemburg is located at 44°30′N 87°45′W (44.50, -87.75). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Luxemburg is home to several businesses, including a cheese factory, a winery, a brewery, and a number of small shops. The village is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a paper mill, a plastics factory, and a metal fabrication plant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 486 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,420.3 people per square mile (548.7/km2). There were 745 housing units at an average density of 572.2 per square mile (221.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.7% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% from other races, and 0.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $22,500 for females. The per capita income for the village was $18,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
