Kewaskum Summary
Kewaskum is a village located in Washington County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,717 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area.
History
Kewaskum was first settled in 1845 by German immigrants. The village was originally known as "Kewaskum Station" and was a stop on the Milwaukee and Mississippi Railroad. The name Kewaskum is derived from the Potawatomi word "Kawaskimink" which means "place of the pines". The village was officially incorporated in 1891.
Geography
Kewaskum is located at 43°27'25" North, 88°10'45" West (43.456944, -88.179167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Kewaskum is home to several businesses, including a manufacturing plant for the Kohler Company, a large plumbing and kitchen fixtures manufacturer. The village also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,717 people, 1,039 households, and 745 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,220.3 people per square mile (471.2/km2). There were 1,072 housing units at an average density of 482.2 per square mile (186.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.90% White, 0.11% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.81% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 0.67% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.11% of the population.
There were 1,039 households, out of which 35.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.2% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.7% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $51,964, and the median income for a family was $60,938. Males had a median income of $41,964 versus $27,917 for females. The per capita income for the village was $22,945.
