Harrison Summary

Harrison is a small town located in Calumet County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Appleton-Oshkosh-Neenah Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Harrison was founded in 1854 by William Harrison, a settler from New York. The town was originally called Harrisonville, but the name was changed to Harrison in 1856. The town was incorporated in 1876.
Harrison was a farming community until the early 1900s, when the railroad came to town. This allowed the town to become a center for the lumber industry. The town also had a brickyard, a cheese factory, and a canning factory.

Geography

Harrison is located at 44°19'25"N 88°20'45"W (44.323862, -88.345845). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Harrison's economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant. The town also has a few small manufacturing companies.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 486 families residing in the town. The population density was 837.2 people per square mile (323.3/km2). There were 745 housing units at an average density of 337.3 per square mile (130.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.9% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.9% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older.
