Grafton Summary

Grafton, Wisconsin is a village located in Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 11,459 at the 2010 census. It is the largest village in the county and is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area.

History

Grafton was first settled in 1845 by a group of German immigrants led by John Grafton. The village was incorporated in 1846 and was named after John Grafton. The village was originally a farming community, but it soon developed into a manufacturing center. In the late 19th century, Grafton was home to several factories, including a paper mill, a brickyard, a brewery, and a tannery.

Geography

Grafton is located at 43°17'45"N 88°10'45"W (43.295833, -88.179167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), of which, 5.1 square miles (13.2 km2) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) of it (1.90%) is water.

Economy

Grafton's economy is largely based on manufacturing and retail. The village is home to several large employers, including Grafton Tool & Die, Grafton Plastics, and Grafton Foundry. The village also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, shops, and service providers.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 11,459 people, 4,541 households, and 3,072 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,241.3 people per square mile (865.7/km2). There were 4,817 housing units at an average density of 945.2 per square mile (364.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 95.2% White, 0.9% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.3% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 4,541 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
