Germantown Summary

Germantown is a village located in Washington County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 19,749 at the 2010 census. Germantown is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area and is located about 20 miles northwest of downtown Milwaukee.

History

Germantown was first settled in 1836 by German immigrants. The village was originally known as "Germantown Settlement" and was incorporated in 1892. The village was named after the German immigrants who settled in the area.
Germantown was a rural farming community until the 1950s when it began to experience rapid growth due to its proximity to Milwaukee. The village has since become a bedroom community for Milwaukee and has seen a large influx of new residents.

Geography

Germantown is located at 43°14′N 88°7′W (43.23, -88.12). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 10.2 square miles (26.4 km2), of which 10.1 square miles (26.2 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

Economy

Germantown is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The village is also home to several corporate headquarters, including Quad/Graphics, Inc., a printing and publishing company, and Kwik Trip, a convenience store chain.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 19,749 people, 7,717 households, and 5,541 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,945.3 people per square mile (750.3/km2). There were 8,072 housing units at an average density of 797.3 per square mile (307.9/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 92.2% White, 2.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 7,717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.2% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.3% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $62,813, and the median income for a family was $73,945. Males had a median income of $50,945 versus $35,945 for females. The per capita income for the village was $27,945. About 2.3% of families and 3.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
