Franklin Summary

Franklin, Wisconsin is a city located in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. It is a suburb of Milwaukee and is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The population was 35,451 at the 2010 census, making it the tenth largest city in Wisconsin.

History

Franklin was first settled in 1836 by a group of settlers from Franklin, Massachusetts. The town was named after Benjamin Franklin, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. The first post office was established in 1837 and the first school was built in 1845.
In 1846, the town was incorporated as a village and in 1892, it was incorporated as a city. The city was known for its dairy industry and was home to several cheese factories. In the late 19th century, the city was also home to several breweries.

Geography

Franklin is located at 43°7′17″N 88°2′17″W (43.1214, -88.0381). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29.0 km2), of which, 11.1 square miles (28.7 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.

Economy

Franklin is home to several large employers, including Quad/Graphics, a printing and publishing company, and Franklin Energy, an energy services company. The city is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 35,451 people, 13,845 households, and 9,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,192.3 people per square mile (1,228.7/km2). There were 14,717 housing units at an average density of 1,323.3 per square mile (510.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 4.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 4.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.3% of the population.
There were 13,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $60,945, and the median income for a family was $71,945. Males had a median income of $50,945 versus $35,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $27,945. About 3.2% of families and 4.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.3% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
