Fitchburg Summary

History

Fitchburg was first settled in 1856 by William Fitch, a farmer from New York. The city was incorporated in 1872 and was named after Fitch. The city grew rapidly in the late 19th century, and by 1900 it had a population of 1,000.
In the early 20th century, Fitchburg was a major center for the dairy industry. The city was home to several large dairy farms, and the area was known for its cheese production. The city also had a large number of small businesses, including a number of small factories.
In the 1950s, Fitchburg began to experience a population boom as people moved to the city from rural areas. This growth continued into the 1960s and 1970s, and by 1980 the city had a population of over 10,000.

Geography

Fitchburg is located at 43°02′N 89°20′W (43.037, -89.333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29.0 km2), of which 11.1 square miles (28.7 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.
The city is located on the western edge of Dane County, and is bordered by the towns of Verona to the north, Madison to the east, and Middleton to the south. The city is located on the western edge of the Driftless Area, a region of the Midwest that was not affected by the last glacial period.

Fitchburg is home to a number of businesses and industries. The city is home to several large employers, including Epic Systems, a software company, and American Family Insurance. The city is also home to a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

As of the 2010 census, there were 25,260 people, 9,945 households, and 6,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,269.2 people per square mile (876.7/km2). There were 10,541 housing units at an average density of 945.2 per square mile (364.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 84.2% White, 5.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 5.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.9% from other races, and 2.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 9,945 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.3 males.
