Dellwood Summary

Dellwood is a small village located in Washington County, Wisconsin, United States. The village is situated on the banks of the Milwaukee River, and is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the village had a population of 1,845.

History

The area that is now Dellwood was first settled in the early 1800s by German immigrants. The village was originally known as "Dellwood Station" and was a stop on the Milwaukee and Mississippi Railroad. The village was officially incorporated in 1891.
In the early 1900s, Dellwood was a popular summer resort destination for Milwaukee residents. The village was home to several resorts, including the Dellwood Hotel, which was built in 1906 and was one of the largest hotels in the area. The hotel was destroyed by fire in 1924.
In the 1950s, Dellwood began to experience a population boom as Milwaukee residents moved to the village in search of affordable housing. The village's population peaked in 1960 at 2,845.

Geography

Dellwood is located at 43°14'17" North, 88°7'17" West (43.238, -88.121). The village is situated on the banks of the Milwaukee River, and is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Dellwood is primarily a residential community, and the village does not have any major industries. The village is home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,539.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 674.2 per square mile (260.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 94.2% White, 1.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $50,000, and the median income for a family was $60,000. Males had a median income of $41,000 versus $30,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $25,000. About 4.2% of families and 5.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
