Deforest Summary

Deforest, Wisconsin is a village located in Dane County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 8,936 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Madison Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Deforest was founded in 1856 by William DeForest, a New York native who had moved to Wisconsin in 1848. He purchased land in the area and began to develop it for farming. In 1868, the Wisconsin Central Railroad was built through the area, and the village was platted in 1869. The village was named after William DeForest, and the first post office was established in 1871.
In the early 1900s, Deforest began to grow rapidly. The village was incorporated in 1906, and the first mayor was elected in 1907. The village continued to grow, and by the 1950s, it had become a thriving community.

Geography

Deforest is located at 43°13'17" North, 89°20'45" West (43.2214, -89.3458). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Deforest is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The village is also home to several large employers, including the Deforest Area School District, the Deforest Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Deforest Area Public Library.

As of the census of 2010, there were 8,936 people, 3,541 households, and 2,521 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,133.3 people per square mile (822.2/km2). There were 3,717 housing units at an average density of 890.2 per square mile (344.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 94.2% White, 1.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 3,541 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.7% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
