History

The area that is now Dalton was first settled in the early 1800s by a group of French-Canadian fur traders. The town was originally known as “La Crosse”, and was later renamed “Dalton” in honor of the first settler, John Dalton. The town was officially incorporated in 1856.
In the late 1800s, Dalton was a thriving agricultural community, with many farms and orchards. The town was also home to a number of small businesses, including a sawmill, a grist mill, and a general store.
