Casco Summary

Casco is a village located in Kewaunee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The area that is now Casco was first settled in 1848 by a group of German immigrants. The village was originally known as "Kasco", a name derived from the Potawatomi word for "bog". The name was changed to "Casco" in 1871.
The village was incorporated in 1891. Casco was a major center of the lumber industry in the late 19th century, and the village was home to several sawmills and a large tannery.

Geography

Casco is located at 44°30′N 87°45′W (44.50, -87.75). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Casco is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 431 households, and 298 families residing in the village. The population density was 902.2 people per square mile (348.7/km2). There were 454 housing units at an average density of 376.2 per square mile (145.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.90% White, 0.09% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.55% of the population.
