Caledonia Summary

Caledonia, Wisconsin is a village located in Racine County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 8,818 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Racine Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Caledonia was first settled in 1835 by a group of settlers from Scotland. The village was named after their homeland. The first post office was established in 1837. The village was incorporated in 1841.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), of which 4.1 square miles (10.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square mile (0.2 km2) is water.

Economy

Caledonia is home to several businesses, including a number of manufacturing companies. The village is also home to a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other services.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 8,818 people, 3,541 households, and 2,541 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,150.2 people per square mile (829.3/km2). There were 3,717 housing units at an average density of 890.2 per square mile (344.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.17% White, 0.45% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.90% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 0.81% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.45% of the population.
There were 3,541 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.7% were non-families. 24.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.99.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.3% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $54,945, and the median income for a family was $63,917. Males had a median income of $45,917 versus $30,917 for females. The per capita income for the village was $25,845. About 2.2% of families and 3.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.7% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
