Black Earth Summary

Black Earth is a village located in Dane County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,338 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Madison Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The area that is now Black Earth was first settled in the early 1840s by settlers from New York and New England. The village was originally known as "Mud Creek" due to the muddy nature of the creek that ran through the area. In 1845, the name was changed to Black Earth, after the dark, fertile soil of the area.
The village was officially incorporated in 1856. In the late 19th century, the village was a major center for the production of cheese and butter. The village also had a number of sawmills and gristmills.

Economy

The economy of Black Earth is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to a number of dairy farms, as well as a number of other farms that produce a variety of crops.
The village also has a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a bank, and a number of restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,338 people, 545 households, and 352 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,097.5 people per square mile (423.3/km2). There were 590 housing units at an average density of 483.3 per square mile (186.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 545 households, out of which 30.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.3% were married couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.4% were non-families. 30.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $45,000, and the median income for a family was $51,250. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $20,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
