Bayside Summary
Bayside is a village located in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 4,521 at the 2010 census. Bayside is located on the western shore of Lake Michigan, just north of Milwaukee.
History
The area that is now Bayside was originally inhabited by Potawatomi Indians. The first white settlers arrived in the area in the 1840s. The village was originally known as "Little Menomonee" and was part of the Town of Milwaukee. In 1846, the area was renamed "Bayside" after the bay that lies between the village and Lake Michigan.
In 1848 the first post office was established in Bayside The village was incorporated in 1887
Geography
Bayside is located at 43°09'N 87°54'W (43.15, -87.90). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Bayside is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The village is also home to several corporate headquarters, including Briggs & Stratton, Johnson Controls, and Northwestern Mutual.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 4,521 people, 1,845 households, and 1,093 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,068.2 people per square mile (798.7/km2). There were 1,945 housing units at an average density of 883.6 per square mile (341.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 87.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 5.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 1,845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.7% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.3 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $62,917, and the median income for a family was $77,917. Males had a median income of $50,000 versus $37,500 for females. The per capita income for the village was $33,917. About 2.7% of families and 4.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
