Ashwaubenon Summary

Ashwaubenon is a village located in Brown County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 17,224 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The area that is now Ashwaubenon was originally inhabited by the Menominee and Ho-Chunk Native American tribes. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the early 19th century. The village was officially incorporated in 1960.

Geography

Ashwaubenon is located at 44°30′N 88°4′W (44.50, -88.07). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which, 8.1 square miles (21.0 km2) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) of it (1.22%) is water.

Economy

Ashwaubenon is home to several large employers, including the Green Bay Packers, Shopko, and the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. The village also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 17,224 people, 7,541 households, and 4,717 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,125.3 people per square mile (819.7/km2). There were 8,039 housing units at an average density of 993.2 per square mile (383.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 94.2% White, 1.2% African American, 0.5% Native American, 1.9% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.3% of the population.
There were 7,541 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.3% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.29 and the average family size was 2.88.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 22.3% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $62,917. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,917 for females. The per capita income for the village was $25,945. About 3.2% of families and 5.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
