Ponderay is a city located in Bonner County, Idaho, United States. It is part of the Sandpoint, Idaho, Micropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,265 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Ponderay was first settled in the late 1800s by homesteaders. The town was originally called "Pend Oreille," after the nearby Pend Oreille River. The name was later changed to Ponderay, after a local Native American chief.
The town was officially incorporated in 1908. In the early 1900s, Ponderay was a thriving logging and mining town. The town was home to several sawmills, a brickyard, and a large copper mine.

Geography

Ponderay is located at 48°14'25" North, 116°30'45" West (48.240278, -116.5125). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,265 people, 545 households, and 327 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,054.2 people per square mile (406.7/km2). There were 602 housing units at an average density of 501.7 per square mile (193.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.8% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 545 households, out of which 24.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.2% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $31,250, and the median income for a family was $37,500. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,845.
