Ammon Summary

Ammon is a city located in Bonneville County, Idaho, United States. It is part of the Idaho Falls, Idaho Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 14,824 at the 2010 census.

History

Ammon was founded in 1883 by a group of Mormon settlers led by William S. Godbe. The settlers named the town after Ammon, a figure in the Book of Mormon. The town was incorporated in 1903.

Geography

Ammon is located at 43°32'25" North, 112°2'17" West (43.540278, -112.038194). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Ammon's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large companies, including J.R. Simplot Company, Idahoan Foods, and Idaho Central Credit Union. The city also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 14,824 people, 5,717 households, and 4,072 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,867.2 people per square mile (1,107.2/km2). There were 6,072 housing units at an average density of 1,174.2 per square mile (454.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.5% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 5,717 households, out of which 34.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.9% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
