Olympia Heights Summary

Olympia Heights is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 8,945 at the 2010 census. Olympia Heights is located in the western part of Miami-Dade County, just south of the city of Miami. It is bordered by the cities of Westchester to the north, Coral Gables to the east, South Miami to the south, and Westwood Lakes to the west.

History

Olympia Heights was originally part of the larger Westwood Lakes area, which was developed in the 1920s. The area was named after the Olympia Theater, which was built in the area in 1926. The theater was a popular destination for locals and visitors alike, and it was the first theater in the area to show talking pictures.
In the 1950s, the area began to be developed as a residential neighborhood. The area was annexed by the City of Miami in 1957, and the Olympia Heights name was officially adopted in 1959.

Geography

Olympia Heights is located at 25°43'25" North, 80°17'45" West (25.723861, -80.295890). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

Economy

Olympia Heights is primarily a residential neighborhood, with most of its residents employed in the nearby cities of Miami and Coral Gables. The area is home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 8,945 people, 3,717 households, and 2,541 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 7,541.3 people per square mile (2,907.2/km2). There were 3,945 housing units at an average density of 3,269.3/sq mi (1,261.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 79.2% White (non-Hispanic), 8.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 5.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.7% from other races, and 2.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 64.2% of the population.
There were 3,717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.86.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 20.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $41,945, and the median income for a family was $48,945. Males had a median income of $35,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $21,945. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
