Port St John Summary
Port St John is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Brevard County, Florida, United States. It is part of the Palm Bay–Melbourne–Titusville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 11,195 at the 2010 census.
History
Port St John was first settled in the late 1800s by a group of settlers from Georgia. The settlement was originally known as Artesia, but was later renamed Port St John after the nearby St. John's River. The area was primarily used for farming and ranching until the 1950s, when the area began to be developed for residential use.
Geography
Port St John is located at 28°27′N 80°48′W (28.45, -80.80). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), of which 8.2 square miles (21.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (1.17%) is water.
Economy
Port St John is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The area is also home to a number of light industrial and manufacturing businesses. The area is served by the Port St John Business Park, which is home to a variety of businesses, including a medical center, a hotel, and a shopping center.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 11,195 people, 4,093 households, and 3,072 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,360.2 people per square mile (525.2/km2). There were 4,521 housing units at an average density of 551.3/sq mi (212.9/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 87.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 4,093 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.2% were non-families. 19.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.73 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 10.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $50,945. Males had a median income of $36,945 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $20,945. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
