Fellsmere Summary
Fellsmere is a small city located in Indian River County, Florida, United States. It is located on the western edge of the county, just south of the St. Johns River. The population was 5,197 at the 2010 census.
History
Fellsmere was founded in 1909 by a group of Swedish settlers led by Axel G. Wenner-Gren. The settlers purchased the land from the Florida Land and Mortgage Company and named the town after the Swedish city of Fellsmere. The settlers built a sawmill and a railroad to transport the lumber to the nearby towns of Sebastian and Vero Beach.
The town was incorporated in 1915 and the first mayor was Axel G. Wenner-Gren. The town grew slowly over the years and by the 1950s, it had a population of about 500.
Geography
Fellsmere is located at 27°47'N 80°37'W (27.78, -80.62). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), of which 4.1 square miles (10.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (2.44%) is water.
Economy
Fellsmere’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several large farms, including the Fellsmere Farms, which grows citrus, vegetables, and other crops. The city is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 5,197 people, 1,845 households, and 1,323 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,258.2 people per square mile (486.2/km2). There were 2,039 housing units at an average density of 498.2 per square mile (192.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 15.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.7% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.2% of the population.
There were 1,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 15.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.20.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,938, and the median income for a family was $41,964. Males had a median income of $30,917 versus $21,964 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,945. About 11.2% of families and 14.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
