Cooper City is a city located in Broward County, Florida, United States. It is part of the South Florida metropolitan area, which is home to 5.5 million people. The city is located about 20 miles northwest of downtown Fort Lauderdale and is bordered by Davie, Pembroke Pines, and Southwest Ranches. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 28,547.

History

Cooper City was founded in 1959 by Morris Cooper, a real estate developer. The city was named after him and was incorporated in 1959. The city was originally planned as a residential community and was designed to be a self-contained city with its own schools, shopping centers, and recreational facilities.

Geography

Cooper City is located at 26°04′N 80°19′W (26.07, -80.32). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), of which 8.2 square miles (21.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (1.17%) is water.

Economy

Cooper City is a primarily residential community, but it does have a few businesses. The city is home to several large employers, including Memorial Healthcare System, Broward County Public Schools, and the City of Cooper City. The city also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 28,547 people, 10,092 households, and 7,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,478.3 people per square mile (1,345.2/km2). There were 10,845 housing units at an average density of 1,323.3 per square mile (510.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White (non-Hispanic), 8.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 6.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 3.2% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 16.2% of the population.
In Cooper City, 10.1% of the population was under the age of 18, 4.3% were between the ages of 18 and 24, 24.2% were from 25 to 44, 33.2% were from 45 to 64, and 28.2% were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44.2 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $76,890, and the median income for a family was $87,945. Males had a median income of $60,945 versus $41,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $35,945. About 3.2% of families and 4.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
