Martin County Summary

Martin County is located in the Treasure Coast region of Florida, along the Atlantic Coast. It is bordered by St. Lucie County to the north, Palm Beach County to the south, and Indian River County to the west. The county seat is Stuart, and the largest city is Palm City. The county was named for John W. Martin, the Governor of Florida from 1925 to 1929.

History

The area that is now Martin County was originally inhabited by the Ais and Jaega Native American tribes. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1700s, and the county was officially established in 1925.
In the early 1900s, the area was known for its pineapple and citrus production. The county was also home to several fishing villages, including Jensen Beach, Stuart, and Port Salerno.
In the 1950s, the area began to experience rapid growth due to the development of the Florida Turnpike and the construction of the St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant. This growth continued into the 1970s, when the population of the county more than doubled.

Geography

Martin County covers an area of 743 square miles, making it the fifth-largest county in Florida. The county is located on the Atlantic Coast, and is bordered by St. Lucie County to the north, Palm Beach County to the south, and Indian River County to the west.
The county is divided into two distinct regions: the mainland and the barrier islands. The mainland is mostly flat and is home to the cities of Stuart, Palm City, and Jensen Beach. The barrier islands are located off the coast and are home to the cities of Hutchinson Island, Jupiter Island, and Sewall’s Point.
The county is home to several rivers, including the St. Lucie River, the Loxahatchee River, and the Indian River Lagoon. The county also contains several lakes, including Lake Okeechobee, Lake Osborne, and Lake Tohopekaliga.

Economy

Martin County has a diverse economy, with industries such as tourism, agriculture, manufacturing, and healthcare. The county is home to several major employers, including Martin Memorial Health Systems, Publix Super Markets, and the Florida Power & Light Company.
The county is also home to several tourist attractions, including the Elliott Museum, the House of Refuge Museum, and the Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center.

As of the 2010 census, Martin County had a population of 146,318. The racial makeup of the county was 87.3% White, 8.2% African American, 0.5% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, and 1.7% from other races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.7% of the population.
