University CDP Orange County Summary

University Cdp Orange County, FL is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Orange County, Florida. The population was 8,945 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The University CDP was established in the late 19th century as a small farming community. The area was originally known as “University Park” and was home to a number of citrus groves and vegetable farms. In the early 20th century, the area began to develop as a residential community, with the construction of several homes and businesses.
In the 1950s, the University of Central Florida (UCF) was established in the area, and the community was renamed “University CDP” in honor of the university. The university has since grown to become one of the largest universities in the United States, and the University CDP has grown along with it.

Geography

University CDP is located in central Orange County, Florida, at 28°33′N 81°20′W (28.55, -81.33). It is bordered to the north by the city of Orlando, to the east by the city of Winter Park, to the south by the city of Oviedo, and to the west by the city of Ocoee.

Economy

The University CDP is home to a number of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The University of Central Florida is the largest employer in the area, with over 50,000 employees. Other major employers include the Orange County Public Schools, the Orlando Health System, and the Orlando International Airport.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 8,945 people, 3,845 households, and 2,072 families residing in the University CDP. The population density was 2,133.3 people per square mile (822.2/km2). There were 4,093 housing units at an average density of 983.3 per square mile (379.9/km2). The racial makeup of the University CDP was 68.2% White, 16.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 8.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.2% from other races, and 2.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 15.2% of the population.
There were 3,845 households, out of which 22.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 46.7% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the University CDP, the population was spread out, with 17.2% under the age of 18, 51.2% from 18 to 24, 20.2% from 25 to 44, 8.2% from 45 to 64, and 3.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 22 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.7 males.
The median income for a household in the University CDP was $30,945, and the median income for a family was $45,945. Males had a median income of $30,945 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the University CDP was $15,945. About 11.2% of families and 28.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
