Sky Lake Summary

Sky Lake is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Orange County, Florida, United States. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 8,945 at the 2010 census.

History

Sky Lake was originally part of the large area of unincorporated Orange County known as South Orange. In the 1950s, the area was developed as a residential community. The name Sky Lake was chosen because of the many small lakes in the area.

Geography

Sky Lake is located at 28°30′N 81°20′W (28.50, -81.33). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.3 square miles (6.0 km2), of which 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) (3.45%) is water.

Economy

Sky Lake is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The area is also home to a number of light industrial and manufacturing businesses.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 8,945 people, 3,717 households, and 2,541 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 4,039.2 people per square mile (1,556.2/km2). There were 3,945 housing units at an average density of 1,764.2/sq mi (683.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 68.2% White, 17.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 5.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 5.3% from other races, and 3.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 14.2% of the population.
There were 3,717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.3% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.84.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 21.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $41,945, and the median income for a family was $47,917. Males had a median income of $32,917 versus $26,917 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $20,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
