Richmond West Summary

Richmond West is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 24,744 at the 2010 census. Richmond West is located in the western part of Miami-Dade County, just south of the city of Miami. It is bordered by the cities of Miami and West Miami to the north, Kendall to the south, and Westchester to the east.

History

Richmond West was originally part of the Richmond Heights area, which was developed in the 1950s. The area was annexed by the City of Miami in the 1960s, but was later de-annexed in the 1970s. The area was then re-designated as a census-designated place (CDP) in the 1980s.

Geography

Richmond West is located at 25°41'17" North, 80°22'45" West (25.688056, -80.379167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.

Economy

Richmond West is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The area is also home to several industrial parks, which provide employment opportunities for local residents.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 24,744 people, 8,945 households, and 6,717 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 5,902.3 people per square mile (2,281.2/km2). There were 9,945 housing units at an average density of 2,372.2 per square mile (914.7/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 64.2% White (non-Hispanic), 20.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 10.2% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 57.2% of the population.
There were 8,945 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 16.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.2% were non-families. 20.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.75 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $41,945, and the median income for a family was $45,945. Males had a median income of $31,945 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $18,945. About 11.2% of families and 13.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
