Palm River Clair Mel Summary
Palm River-Clair Mel, Florida is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Hillsborough County, Florida. It is part of the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 22,149 at the 2010 census.
History
The area now known as Palm River-Clair Mel was originally inhabited by the Tocobaga people, who were part of the larger Timucua tribe. The area was first settled by Europeans in the late 19th century, when the area was part of Manatee County. The area was annexed by Hillsborough County in 1921.
The area was originally known as Clair Mel, named after the Clair Mel post office, which was established in 1884. The name was changed to Palm River in the 1950s, when the post office was moved to the area. The two names were combined in the 1990s to form the current name of Palm River-Clair Mel.
Geography
Palm River-Clair Mel is located at 27°56'25" North, 82°25'17" West (27.940278, -82.421389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), of which 8.2 square miles (21.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.
Economy
The economy of Palm River-Clair Mel is largely based on the service industry. The area is home to several retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses. The area is also home to several industrial and manufacturing companies, including a large paper mill.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 22,149 people, 8,845 households, and 5,845 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,689.3 people per square mile (1,037.2/km2). There were 9,717 housing units at an average density of 1,183.2 per square mile (456.3/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 68.2% White, 18.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 3.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 6.7% from other races, and 3.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 18.3% of the population.
There were 8,845 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 16.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $35,945, and the median income for a family was $41,945. Males had a median income of $30,945 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $17,945. About 11.2% of families and 14.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
